Sky customers with a Sky+ HD box and a TV that supports 3D will get a free week of 3D TV from Sky in August.
From Monday the 13th to Monday the 20th of August 2012, Sky’s 3D channel will be broadcast subscription-free. The 3D channel, great for showing off your expensive TV with 3D glasses, is normally free, but only to customers of Sky World – To get this, you need to subscribe to everything… Sky Entertainment Extra, Sky Movies, Sky Sports and Sky HD. That’s a total of nearly £66 a month at the time of writing.
Given that there’s been a decent chunk of 3D coverage of the Olympics, no doubt Sky’s keen to see if it can hook its subscribers to stay with the 3D experience, and try a sample of free movies, documentaries and sporting events in 3D, in the hope that customers will take out Sky World and get the 3D channel as standard.
Two of the biggest complaints we hear about the Sky 3D service is that there should be a dedicate Sports 3D channel, and there should be an option for those not into sport to be able to subscribe. At present, if you want to watch movies and documentaries, you have to pay for a sports package to get it, which is not ideal for many. Nonetheless, the 3D experience on a Sky box is great, and if you have a telly to show off 3D, then Sky’s the way to do it.
Tip of the Week
If you want some free 3D content, set up your Sky Planner to record a few films and 3D programmes. In theory, it should be possible to watch the 3D content once the free week is up. Don’t have a 3D TV yet? If you’re planning to get one soon, it might be worth recording some of the content on your Sky+ HD box during the free period, just in case!
Get Free 3D
From the 13th to the 20th, get your free 3D content on your Sky+ HD box via the Sky 3D channel on Sky Channel 217

I have a Sky+ HD box, but don’t subscribe to HD broadcasts. I can view the free to air HD (BBC HD etc) and could watch the Olymics in 3D, but when I went on to the Sky 3D (C217), it was scrambled. So you don’t only need the Sky HD box, but also pay the £10/month extra. If I did that, I’d get SKY 3D anyway!
Not really a freebie is it!
